Spain
Spain is a country that feels less like a single nation and more like a passionate collection of distinct kingdoms, stitched together by a shared love for noise, food, and the outdoors. It is a place where life is lived entirely in the public square—the plaza—and where the rhythm of the day is delightfully out of sync with the rest of the world. Here, lunch is a lingering, three-hour affair, dinner doesn’t even start until 10 PM, and the “siesta” is less about sleeping and more about escaping the midday sun to recharge for a long, vibrant night.
Geographically, it is a land of startling contradictions. The stereotype of sun-drenched beaches and flamenco dancers only tells a fraction of the story. In the rainy, emerald-green north of Galicia and Asturias, bagpipes drone over Celtic cliffs that look like Ireland; in the arid center, windmills tilt against the vast, dusty plains of Don Quixote’s La Mancha; and in the south, the snow-capped Sierra Nevada rises above the desert heat of Andalusia. It is a continent in miniature, offering a landscape for every type of traveler.
Culturally, Spain is a deep, complex mosaic. It is the only place in Europe where you can walk through the archways of a Moorish palace in the morning, stand in the shadow of a Gothic cathedral at noon, and marvel at futuristic, titanium architecture by dusk. The regional identities here are fierce—from the culinary independence of the Basque Country to the artistic pride of Catalonia—creating a tension and energy that keeps the country dynamic and endlessly fascinating.
But the true soul of Spain is found at the bar counter. Whether it’s pintxos in San Sebastián or tapas in Seville, eating here is a chaotic, social contact sport. It is a destination that invites you to throw away your watch, order a vermouth, and let the night take you where it wants. Spain doesn’t just welcome you; it engulfs you.
